The ‘Charms of Christmas’ concert with panpipe virtuoso Hannah Schlubeck and harpist Isabel Moreton on 15 December 2024 in the French Cathedral promises to put you in an enchanting mood for the Christmas season. The two musicians, who have been working together successfully for almost two decades, will present a varied programme that includes well-known and rarely heard Christmas music from various countries.
Highlights of the programme include traditional European Christmas melodies, but also Baroque music such as the wintry Largo from Antonio Vivaldi's ‘Four Seasons’ or pieces from the Romantic period such as the famous ‘Noël’ by Adolphe Adam. The Advent Fantasy by Hannah Schlubeck, composed especially for pan flute and harp, allows the two instruments to shine in harmonious interplay. The solo piece Conte de Noël by Alphonse Hasselmans for harp also promises a sonorous journey into the world of Christmas.
Two Irish-English suites included in the programme with the themes ‘Winter’ and ‘Christmas’ are particularly suitable for the combination of the panpipes with their warm sound and the floating, delicate clouds of sound of the concert harp.
This concert in the church hall will transport listeners into a contemplative, Advent world of sound and create a unique atmosphere through the combination of pan flute and harp - a wonderful opportunity to indulge in the magic of the Advent and Christmas season.

Vivaldi's Four Seasons by the Festival Orchester Berlin
For 20 years, the Festival Orchester Berlin, a multicultural association of musicians from leading European orchestras, has been delighting audiences with its repertoire of Baroque, Viennese Classical and Romantic music, complemented by musical rarities. In this concert, the ensemble will be focussing on the music of the Venetian grand master Antonio Vivaldi. Vivaldi created a timeless work of art with his interpretation of the Four Seasons. A virtuoso violinist himself, the composer combined four violin concertos in 1725 to form the ‘Four Seasons’. The natural phenomena that characterise each season are enhanced by a variety of sounds. The music thus portrays nature, animals and people in spring, summer, autumn and winter. In addition to Antonio Vivaldi's masterpiece, other highlights for chamber orchestra will be heard in this concert. The orchestra plays on old Italian instruments, guaranteeing an outstandingly beautiful sound.

You have never heard Franz Schubert's ‘Winterreise’ like this before: countertenor Zvi Emanuel-Marial impresses with his musicality and expressiveness. Based on poems by Wilhelm Müller, Schubert set one of the best-known and most popular song cycles in music history in 1827. Wandering, the leitmotif of Romanticism, is uniquely emphasised in ‘Winterreise’. Schubert's romantic masterpiece sounds astonishingly present, sadly beautiful and in the special interplay between the alto and his pianist Jonathan Aner in the impressive acoustics of the Friedrichstadtkirche in the French Cathedral.
