HUGENOTTENMUSEUM – Experience history at Gendarmenmarkt
The Huguenot Museum Berlin in the Französischer Dom at Gendarmenmarkt tells one of the most significant migration stories in Europe. Since 1935, the museum has documented the history of French religious refugees in the 17th century – a fascinating insight into the history of the Huguenots in Berlin.
The focus is on the Edict of Potsdam of 1685: the Great Elector granted refuge to 20,000 French Protestants. Around 1700, one in five Berliners was of French origin! The Huguenot Museum at Gendarmenmarkt displays original documents, paintings, and manuscripts.
The exhibition in the Französischer Dom Berlin documents the flight and social rise of the Huguenots. Learn how they shaped Berlin Mitte in science, art, crafts, and business—still visible today in the textile industry, education, and French cuisine. Open Tuesday through Sunday—one of the most important historical sights in Berlin Mitte.
Carillon in the French Cathedral
The carillon in Berlin's Französischer Dom is one of the most impressive carillons in the capital. With 60 bronze bells, it is the second largest carillon in Berlin and a musical landmark on Gendarmenmarkt. The term “carillon” comes from French and means “tower chimes” – an instrument that can be played manually via a keyboard or automatically.
Inside the Französischer Dom in Berlin Mitte, you can admire the intricate mechanics and imposing bells up close. The carillon at Gendarmenmarkt plays daily at fixed times.
Installed in 1987 to mark Berlin's 750th anniversary, the Gendarmenmarkt viewing platform offers the opportunity to experience the carillon and hear the bells ringing over the city.
FRANZÖSISCHE FRIEDRICHSTADTKIRCHE – Church services & concerts
The Französische Friedrichstadtkirche on Gendarmenmarkt is the spiritual heart of the French community in Berlin. Built between 1701 and 1705 for Huguenot refugees, it is one of the most important Protestant churches in Berlin Mitte – today home to the “Französische Kirche zu Berlin” .
The church on Gendarmenmarkt impresses with its architecture and cultural program. On Sundays, church services are held in German and French – a living testimony to the French-German tradition in Berlin.
Regular concerts attract music lovers to Gendarmenmarkt Berlin. The restored Steinway grand piano from 1963 offers excellent sound quality for unforgettable concert moments.
Rebuilt between 1981 and 1983 after being destroyed in the war, the Huguenot Church in Berlin combines historical heritage with modern community life. Service times and visiting hours can be found on the community's website.
Steinway for concerts
The Steinway & Sons KM182 was built in 1963 at the Steinway factory in Hamburg. Klangmanufaktur Hamburg purchased the grand piano privately from Flensburg, where it had been used for many years by a piano teacher. The instrument was completely overhauled in the workshop in Hamburg and restored to a high, concert-ready standard. Since then, the instrument has been owned by a private investor and is now located in the Französischer Dom am Gendarmenmarkt in Berlin.
There, it is made available for events and is part of the understanding of sustainable resource conservation. In addition to the preservation and careful restoration of particularly material-intensive components of the original structure, such as the soundboard, the case, and the cast iron plate, old, worn parts are replaced. The focus in the selection of materials is on high quality, long service life, and ecological sustainability. For example, harmful lead is not used, and CKM key weights, a high-quality alternative made of brass, are used instead. In addition, instead of the plastic-based piano lacquer commonly used in the industry, a more environmentally friendly wood preservative such as hard oil is used.
