From history

A refugee church stands in the middle of Berlin's most famous square. Built by and for the French religious refugees - the Huguenots. The laying of the foundation stone took place in the presence of Crown Prince Friedrich Wilhelm. The more famous French Cathedral was built decades later around 1780, at the same time as the German Cathedral. Both are the hallmarks of the Gendarmenmarkt, which is said to be modelled after the Roman Piazza de Popolo.
